Veeeeery similar way to display projects:
http://siteinspire.net/showcase/view/899/toko
Reminds me of
http://www.studiomister.com
Wasn’t aware of Studio Mister, but had seen Toko before. Thanks for bringing it up to my attention. Will have to make some changes to the site.
i don’t think it’s too similar, it looks nicer than the other sites. even if you did find inspiration on the other sites.. you did it better than them ! haha
so you used a grid. no big deal.. i say don’t change it.
I’m pretty sure that using a using a sans-serif typeface combined with a 4/5 column grid and thumbnails will remind everyone of a hundred sites (mine even has those elements) - would love to see anyone ‘claim’ this layout/design as their own - this one does at least look a bit different.
Correct - no one can claim ‘ownership’ of a sans-serif typeface combined with a 5 column grid.
It must be pure coincidence that they are very similar.

Mike, the earliest example I know of, of this ‘style’, is Khoi Vinh’s Subtraction (
http://www.subtraction.com/), circa 2003, and even he would likely not claim ownership of the style for fear of Müller-Brockmann & co. rolling over in their graves.
I can think of at least 5 examples of web sites that look utterly identical to your Studio Mister site that predate it by years, actually. If you’re going to defend your own site from ‘being copied’, at least ensure it’s even somewhat original.
It’s Toko and Studio Mister that look alike though. They both have sticky headers as well.
I don’t see anyone saying the design isn’t good. that’s a designer’s job. the obsession lately with comparing a designer’s portfolio to everyone else’s is really concerning. it distracts from the fact that it is a display of his work, which by the way is extremely effective in communicating his client’s objectives. but here we are nitpicking at what other designer portfolio sites it resembles. crying shame. great job btw, David.
I can’t tell if Mike is being facetious or not, but the idea that this design is at all plagiaristic is ridiculous. A multi column, gridded layout with sans-serif is practically a trope in the design world.
Couldn’t agree more.
It’s all in the details. Good work. Lets move on.
@David - Job well done. To echo John’s sentiments, I think you did it better than the aforementioned sites. I love that this is a WP build. Like the notion of using categories to segment your work, though when clicking through to different categories, it seems there isn’t a way to drill down. Further, when on project pages, it would be nice to be able to cross link to similar projects via your categories.
@Mike - I agree with you re: the about and approach pages. The IA is similar, though if the sites didn’t share a related grid structure it would be a moot point.
